Big Book: Pages for Peace is the project started by a group of middle school students devoted to the idea that kids CAN make a difference in helping to create a more peaceful world. To prove their point, our after-school writers’ club at Groton-Dunstable Middle School in Groton, MA worked for twelve years to build the biggest book in the world about peace. We began by writing letters asking people worldwide to send us their messages of peace.
Over time we received thousands of letters, poems, and pieces of artwork from all around the world and we began work to compile them all into the Big Book. That is when we knew that this project had the potential to spread an inspirational message, and the world’s largest book about peace was born. The book is over 1000 pages long and includes thousands of pieces of content sent into our students, with each page of the Big Book measuring an incredible 12 feet tall by 10 feet wide.
Now that the Big Book has been completed and displayed at the JFK Library in Boston, the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, and the Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island, we are ready to spread its inspirational messages of peace with the world through exhibitions in museums, libraries, galleries, and conferences.
Our mission is to share the Big Book’s messages of peace with the world and in doing so demonstrate the value of peace education. We hope to do so not only by displaying the Big Book and its interactive digital edition, but by developing a peace education curriculum to connect, educate, and inspire a new generation of Peacemakers around the world.
